On being "lazy" about software freedom:

Everyone lives a full life. Not everyone gets the same opportunity to pick what fills their life, though. People are busy. They have things they like to do or find easy, & things that are unpleasant or difficult.

People whose life is filled differently than yours, who have different priorities than yours, aren't any more lazy than you are lazy for not picking a more compassionate way to talk about the challenges standing in the way of software freedom.

Well, this 14 minute test stream is actually watchable but I still haven't got the mic situation figured out. I will in time. For now this is good enough for me. I just want to practice speaking and maybe capture a few Minecraft memories for later. twitch.tv/tassaron/v/119888943

This $50 Bluetooth headset sounds quite good on Windows even if it does require playing control-panel-games to get it working like a normal microphone (by default it's only used for phone calls). On KDE Plasma it's much easier to configure the audio devices but then the Bluetooth codec or whatever makes it sound like dogshit. Hopefully Linux media production will be easier someday. Reading a manual to get simple devices working is no fun :professor:

I was using the built-in mic on my laptop with a noise gate, which works okay but turns out I was talking too quietly because it was early morning. So half my speech got cut by the gate. Every other microphone I have, other than a webcam, is not working properly out of the box on KDE Neon and I don't have the patience to learn about the snakepit called Linux audio -_- So until I do, I'll just talk louder.

I streamed for an hour on Twitch this morning, building paths around the wheat fields heading to the 7 windmills that still need roofs built... I didn't talk much but yeah, I might as well stream in case something interesting happens. Gives me an excuse to talk to myself

I’ve been running an instance since 2017 and I gotta say the whole moderation experience sucks. And I can’t even automate it because the API fof domain suspension doesn’t seem to exist, and then only alternative is manually finding and white listing Every Instance. #mastodev #mastoadmin

It used to be that there was a huge library of different window manager themes on themes.org / themes.freshmeat.net, but a few years back the site shut down and there doesn't appear to have been any attempt to archive it. Damn shame to see user generated content like this just vanish.

Ironically, it seems freshmeat for several years in response to the archive.org crawler was just serving empty pages with the message, "There is no need to mirror our content". Turns out yes, there was.

weird programming take

I have been trying to force my android phone to stay connected to a wifi network that has no internet. Why? A local wireless area network doesn't have to be about getting online. There are other use cases. But a spy device needs to call home, and being on a wifi network, but not reaching the internet, must be akin to physical pain for a google device. Unbelievable.

In I built a regular mob farm above my iron farm which also contains an automatic bamboo farm... If I add a few more automatic food and supply farms then I can probably get 60% of my daily items by standing in the basement of this weird blue tower.

"Theme" is a more common word than "colorway". I've never heard the word "colorway" in my entire life. Theme parks exist. Themed restaurants exist. People know what a theme is

Mozilla's strategy: Using the same dishonest, condescending language as the competition.
A working strategy would be: Doing literally anything else
we chose “Colorways” rather than “themes” to show we are branching out from our language of “browser” to speak the language of everyday life and everyday users. This is about more than just installing a new “theme,” which really doesn’t have much meaning to most people.
thinks people don't know what a theme is. Mozilla has no idea what their target audience is anymore 🤨

if you want entertainment, check out this Mozilla spokesperson trying to pretend that the choose-a-colour theming fad is related to privacy and the open web 🤯 blog.mozilla.org/en/products/f Wtf is wrong with this company...

Firefox "Colourways" is available for a limited time, just like every other software theming fad. A few years ago we had dark mode, now we have choose-a-colour (Android 12, KDE, elementaryOS). Enjoy the fad while it lasts because software aesthetics will never stop changing.

(Btw, Windows Vista did it best)

With auto-hiding bottom-toolbars becoming common on mobile browsers, you could probably glue a fake address bar to the bottom of the viewport and trick someone into tapping on it. I don't think this would accomplish much but maybe you could think of something 🤔
